The race was postponed for one day due to heavy rain and thunderstorms that hit the Northwoods Thursday afternoon.
Rhinelander was without a few of its top runners for the meet. Siblings Bridger and Sage Flory missed the meet, as did Abbie Henricks, giving some of the underclassmen a chance to shine.
The Hodag girls finished together in a pack, with all seven of the varsity runners placing inside the top 20. Freshman Audrey Schiek led the way as she snuck into the top 10, placing 10th overall with a time of 22 minutes, 46.3 seconds over the 5-kilometer course.
"It was nice for other kids to get an opportunity and I'm really happy for Audrey Schiek to medal," coach M.J. Laggis said.
Schiek's older sister, Ella - new to the team after making a midseason switch from swimming - was Rhinelander's second fastest Friday finishing in 11th overall (23:22.7).
"I didn't know how she'd respond in her first meet but she's an athletic girl and she's in pretty good shape. She's conditioned pretty well," Laggis said. "She's definitely a factor and I hope it works out because it's nice to have athletes in the program and she's definitely an athlete."
Megan Brown was 12th overall for Rhinelander (23:42.4), Claire Bowman finished 16th (24:29.3), Emma Germain was 18th (24:43.9), Liana Teter finished 19th (24:49.6) and Jenna Younker was 20th (25:03.5).
Sophomore Jacob Weddle paced the Hodag boys' taking 13th overall (19:22.7). JC Adams was 24th (20:31.0), followed by Levi Smith (25th, 20:32.5), Cal Laggis (31st, 21:20.8), Jack DeNamur (35th, 22:12.7), Jakob Losch (40th, 22:46.5) and Koldyn Gechas (43rd, 23:02.4).
"Jacob Weddle had a really, really nice time," coach Laggis said. "He went 19:22 and I thought for Jacob it was a really nice step up meet. Bridger Flory wasn't there, so it was up to Weddle to lead the show. I thought he had a really good meet. He just kind of laid it out there.
"JC Adams was our No. 2 and he continues to improve. He went 20:31 so there's no reason he's not in the teens here pretty darn quick, and he will be. Levi Smith is a guy, he's 20:32, so he's right on that cusp of getting down in the teens."
Great Northern Conference rivalry Tomahawk swept the boys and girls' team competitions on Friday. The Hodags finished two points behind Laona/Wabeno for second in the girls' division. Northland Pines beat Rhinelander by 25 points for second in the boys' division.
"I'm happy with those guys that they're improving but when you look at the conference standards, we've got to go a lot lower, that's for sure," Laggis said.
The Hodags return to action Thursday at Waupaca.
