Find unique crafts at the Hodag Farmers' Market

By Cassie Shefchik-

As the Hodag Farmers' Market has always wanted to be known as a produce market not a craft market, I don't write about too many craft vendors.

Though there are a few vendors who predominately sell crafts, with approval from the market board, all other vendors are allowed to fill up to 20 percent of their market stall with craft items.

Two things happened last week that convinced me to write about crafts. First, I was informed by Jim that he would be doing one more Hodag Farmers' Market before he starts doing fall craft sales. Jim is the vendor who sells beautiful birdhouses and other wooden garden items. Saturday will be the last time this year you'll be able to buy his beautiful, handmade items in Rhinelander. He will be back next year for the Hodag Farmers' Market.

The second thing that happened was a vendor sold one gentleman two one-pound bricks of beeswax. The customer stated he was getting a head start on Christmas shopping.

At times you can find handmade hats, mittens and scarves at the market. One hand-knitted item, dishcloths, are not only environmentally and eco-friendly they also last longer than many plastic scrubbers. An added bonus, they are also machine washable. Hand-woven rugs, made of recycled fabrics, are also machine washable. Though they cost about twice as much as those purchased in a big box store, they last for many, many years and withstand the rigors of day-to-day life.

Another fun craft item you can find at the Hodag Farmers' Market are woollies. Woollies, made of felted wool, come in novelty and realistic fauna. Our little hidden Hodag is a woolly created by one of the vendors. That same vendor also has stained glass suncatchers of Hodags and hummingbirds.

Crafts that are made from wood and other natural elements include hanging wall vases, picture frames, framed jigsaw puzzles and posters, and small canoes made out of birch bark.

One young couple recently purchased a little birch bark canoe as a wedding cake topper! Another vendor uses dried weeds, flowers and grasses in wreaths and swags. Let's not forget the fun Rock Critters.

There are so many unique handmade items to be found at the Hodag Farmers' Market. Pictures can be found on the market's Facebook page or stop on down to the Hodag Farmers' Market this Saturday, at Pioneer Park from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Don't forget, there's also plenty of fresh produce, canned goods, syrup, honey, cheese, baked goods, eggs, chicken and beef available.
