The Hodags scored maximum points Thursday night as they defeated Lakeland 7-0 in Minocqua to close out the GNC dual meet schedule.
The win, coupled with Antigo's 6-1 victory over Medford Thursday night, gives Rhinelander a 10-point lead on the Red Robins in the conference standings. However, the Robins have one more conference match to play and would take the lead in the standings with a win of 6-1 or better this Tuesday against Wausau Newman.
"We controlled what we could, now we wait for the Antigo scores in their last two matches and prepare for the conference meet," Hodag coach Bob Heideman said after Thursday's match.
Rhinelander dominated doubles on Thursday night, dropping two games total in the three matches.
Annika Johnson and Haley Seefeldt were 6-1, 6-0 winners in the first flight over Lakeland's Hayley Fieck and Anna Maulson, Madi Losch and Alexis Pyrchalla defeated Kiah Guthrie and Julie Neuberg 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, and Jackie Wells and Savannah Chartier were 6-0, 6-1 winners over Cierra Hayman and Brie Nimsgern in the third flight.
"Annika and Haley were pretty steady which is important in their game," Heideman said. "They kept the ball in play long enough to wait for their opportunities. Madi and Alexis controlled the match from the net. The points were short. They didn't give Lakeland many chances."
Over in singles, Alex Oestreich was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Reilly Coon at No. 1, Emma Roberts beat Linnea Turner 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Kenedy Van Zile beat Tessa Tourmoen 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Kaylee Pontell beat Lorraine Hammes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
"It was encouraging to see, we got stronger as the sets and meet progressed," Heideman said. "Despite the scores, Lakeland was competing to the end. They have some fighters on that team. This was not an easy match."
Rhinelander moved to 21-4 on the season with one more dual meet remaining on its schedule, a non-conference tilt against D.C. Everest Sept. 24. The Hodags won't play again until the GNC tournament Saturday, Sept. 22 in Minocqua.
