The Oneida County Health Department will offer a flu vaccine clinic from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at James William Middle School cafeteria. A second mass flu vaccine clinic is also scheduled for 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Rhinelander High School cafeteria.

The flu vaccine is free for children 18 and under, according to a health department press release. Parent/guardian(s) must be present with their child at the time of vaccination.

Flu vaccine is also available for adults 19 years and up at the prices listed below.

Fluzone Quadrivalent, Injectable Vaccine:

• Protects against four virus strains.

• Private pay cost : $40

Fluzone High-Dose Influenza Vaccine

• This is available for people 65 years of age and older.

• The body's immune defense becomes weaker with age, which puts older adults at a greater risk for developing serious illnesses from the flu.

• It contains four times the amount of antigen than "regular" flu shots ("antigen" is the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody).

• It is intended to create a stronger immune response (more antibodies equals more protection) in the person getting the vaccine.

• Protects against three virus strains.

• Private pay cost: (to be determined).

The health department will accep the following insurances.

• Security Health Plan

• UMR

• United Healthcare

• Medicare/Medicare Advantage Plans

• Medicaid/Badgercare

"Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get vaccinated," the release states. "It is recommended that all people 6 months and older get a flu shot. Certain people are at higher risk of complications from the flu. Those people include: Children age 6 months to 18 years, pregnant women, people 50 years and older, anyone with chronic medical conditions, and people who live in nursing homes."

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to protect yourself from getting the flu is to practice good hand washing, get your flu shot each year, stay home when you are sick, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
