The James Williams Middle School girls' cross country team scored a narrow victory Thursday, Sept. 6 in their home invitational at Rhinelander High School.

The Hodags placed five runners in the top 21 overall to edge Merrill by one point in the six-team girls' race. JWMS placed third in the boys' division.

Sixth-graders Reese Gehrig and Sophia Miljevich led the way for the Hodags, crossing the line a second apart in fifth and sixth, overall. Gehrig's time of 13 minutes, 21 seconds was 1:21 off the pace set by race winner Nora Gremban of Northland Pines.

Genna Fugle was 14th overall for JWMS, Eva Hetland was 17th and - in the race that proved to be for the win - Kyle Hartman edged Merrill's Lily Grefe by three seconds for 21st overall in a battle of each team's fifth runners.

Lexi Bishop (25th), Maria Hubler (28th), Leah Jamison (29th), Juliana Smith (31st), Luciana Grage (38th), Aubrey Younker (40th), Lynnea Kivi (44th), Karly Klinger (65th), Grace Berger (66th), Mia Tulowitzky (70th) and Jamie Kolb (82nd) rounded out the Hodags' running order.

Eighth-grader Cody Ruetz led the JWMS boys with an fifth-place finish overall, crossing the line in 12:35. Jack Siedl (10th), Jett Biolo (11th), Iain Rumney (29th) and Cody Everson (31st) rounded out Rhinelander's top five.

The rest of the running order for the Hodags was Eli Lundy (38th), Connor Terzinski (41st), Payton McCue (45th), Travis White (46th), Zacha King (52nd) and Van Tulowitzky (58th).
