Rhinelander Country Club member publishes children's book about golf
By Kayla Thomason-
Teresa Cleary's "Going Golfing" was published Aug. 15.
"A young girl walks along with her dad while he is golfing," Cleary said of the book's plot. "She enjoys watching how far he hits the ball and the less-than-desirable places where his ball sometimes ends up. She goes with her grandma on another day. Grandma doesn't hit the ball very far, but she has more favorable results."
A paraprofessional in the Three Lakes School District, Cleary said she has always wanted to write a children's book but was waiting for an original idea.
"I came up with the idea for this story one day while I was golfing with my husband," she said. "He hits the ball much farther than I do, but on that day my results were better than his."
She wrote the book in 2016 and submitted it to a couple of well-known publishing companies but they declined to publish it. In the spring of this year she learned about Orange Hat Publishing Company, based in Waukesha, and submitted the story. They liked it and the book when to print in August.
"I hope readers will see that golf is a great lifetime sport," Cleary said. "You don't have to be the youngest, biggest or strongest to enjoy the game or to score well. One of my friends, a woman in her mid-70s, shot 42 during morning league this summer. That's a great score ... just six strokes over par. At our club, there are golfers in their 80s that are still enjoying the game of golf."
Cleary plans to donate copies of her book to the Three Lakes Elementary School and Sugar Camp Elementary School libraries.
"Going Golfing," which is available for purchase on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, is 20-pages long and is geared to children who are 3 years old to students in third grade.
