The Rhinelander High School volleyball team got incrementally better in each set Tuesday night, but did not have enough to get by Antigo in a three-game sweep.

The Robins defeated the Hodags 25-10, 25-11 and 25-14 in the Great Northern Conference match at Sheldon Fieldhouse.

Coach Brianna Scheuermann said the third set was by far the best of the three the Hodags played in the match, something she hopes the team can build on when it holds the first round of the GNC tournament on Saturday.

"The third set, they went out and it was like a whole different team," she said. "Brooke Mork had a really good kill. I was pumped about that. The girls were digging. It was a whole new team on the third set. If we can bring that each and every set, we definitely would be a competitive team to play against."

Scheuermann said a slow start and boisterous crowd in Antigo played a factor for her team in the first two sets.

"We definitely got off to a slow start," she said. "I don't know if was just nerves or something, but the girls weren't able to get good passes up, so we weren't able to put the ball down. We gave Antigo easy plays. The second set, we were by their fan base and I think that got into their heads a little bit."

Scheuermann said she was impressed by the play of Mork, a senior outside hitter who recorded two kills Tuesday, and had two service aces only five serve attempts.

"I feel like Brooke Mork was kind of our stud player," she said. "She definitely stepped up. She was hitting the ball better. We were working on that in practice. She was digging in the back row, moving around more. That was a good thing to see from her tonight."

Statistically, Brylee Ridderbusch led the team with three kills, while Kahlie Arneson added a kill and three blocks. Aryssa Zasada had four set assists and the team spread things around defensively. Hannah Worachek and Zasada each had five digs. Mikayla Evenstad and Mork chipped in four digs each.

Rhinelander (1-23, 0-2 Great Northern) will host the first leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament Saturday at the Mizaga Gym. The Hodags will receive a bye in the first-round of the three-round tournament. Rhinelander will take on Lakeland in Round 2 and Northland Pines in Round 3.

"They are teams we haven't really seen yet," Scheuermann said. "Hopefully we can bring that team from the third set there. We have a bye the first round, hopefully we can see what they've got going on and just go from there."
