A fall adventure: NCES students visit Merrill orchard
Once the students arrived at the orchard they learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin. The group also learned that pumpkins grow from a seed and eventually can be picked from a vine. Many of the students were surprised at how long the vines can grow.
The students also enjoyed a wagon ride through the orchard. They noticed all of the different apple trees and the many fields of pumpkins. When the wagon stopped, the students were able to choose a pumpkin gourd to take home.
The students then went on a hike through the corn maze. There were so many trails to discover, some of the youngsters thought that they were lost. They had to use their problem solving skills to find their way out.
Helene's Hilltop Orchard provided the students with an interactive playground. The students were able to climb on straw, tires and old machinery. Finally the students enjoyed a lunch together. The NCES PAC funded admission and transportation to the orchard.
