Stepmother convicted in toddler death case

By River News Staff-

It took an Oneida County jury less than two hours Thursday to convict Ellen Tran of causing the death of her 20-month-old stepson Avery Edwards back in April 2017.

Tran, formerly of Newbold, was found guilty of first-degree reckless homicide after a four-day jury trial in Oneida County Circuit Court featuring testimony from investigators, medical personnel and Edwards' mother, Lori.

After the verdict was read and each individual juror confirmed their vote, Tran's bond was revoked and she was remanded to jail. Judge Patrick O'Melia said he would order a pre-sentence investigation, a process that takes approximately 30 to 45 days, and sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.

Tran faces a maximum of 60 years in prison.

A full report will be published in Saturday's River News.
