That's from Jim Tuckwell, chair of the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation (VCEDC) board.
He's describing the recent project where a group of Nicolet College Business Professionals of America (BPA) students took on the exacting task of creating the corporation's annual report, detailing the numerous activities the corporation engaged in over the past year to advance education and spur economic development and entrepreneurship in the region.
Angela Platek was one of the four students working on the project.
"It was exciting to get the reports back from the printer and to actually hold the finished product in our hands," Platek said in a press release describing the project. "It was rewarding to take what we've learned in classes and then apply that knowledge to a real-world project like this. It gave all of us confidence moving forward to take on projects that we've never done before."
Nicolet's Administrative Professional Instructor and BPA Advisor Tracey MacQuarrie said she was impressed by how well students came together as a team.
"Creating an annual report is a big project that requires coordination on multiple levels," MacQuarrie noted. "It was great to see the students take ownership, divide up the work by their areas of expertise, and bring all the pieces together to produce an excellent product."
One of the surprises for Platek beyond the production of the annual report was how much she learned about the economic development corporation, the releases states.
"It was very interesting to learn about all the different things they do to promote economic development in the area and all they do to help entrepreneurs launch and run successful businesses."
Tuckwell noted the idea for the corporation to work with Nicolet students originated with Bob Egan, executive director of the VCEDC and member of the Nicolet College Board of Trustees.
"Bob saw that this would be a good fit for the students and for the corporation," Tuckwell said. "The students were great to work with. They completed an impressive project that they can now add to their career portfolios and the corporation received a very nice annual report."
The economic development corporation has a long history of working with Nicolet and the statewide Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). In 2017, the WTCS honored the corporation with its Futuremaker Partner Award for its commitment to promote education, entrepreneurship and economic development.
