One last farmers' market

One last farmers' market
One last farmers' market

By By Cassie Shefchik-

This Saturday will be the last market in the park for the year. There are three dates that are important to members of the Hodag Farmers' Market: the first day of market, the weekend of the Oneida County Fair, and the last day of market.

Trying to become an organized adult, I jotted down that information in the handy dandy weekly planner I purchased at the dollar store.

Saturday is the last day of Hodag Farmers' Market at Pioneer Park for this year. The vendors send a hearty thank you to the community, the Oneida County Fair, the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce (of which we are a member), the parks and rec Department, Rhinelander City Hall and, of course, all our customers.

Every now and then an incident happens that everyone notices. Such a thing happened last week during a very chilly Hodag Farmers' Market. Vendors and shoppers all took notice of a particular moment.

Everyone watching smiled as one person walked along carrying two bags that might have been too heavy a burden for their stature. The struggle and hardship could be seen by all, but no one dared to interfere.

Just day-to-day living can be a struggle. It doesn't matter if you farm or craft, work in retail or in a factory. Day-in and day-out, it can be a struggle.

Every now and then you realize just how much easier you have it when you see someone persevere over an obstacle.

The wee child was young. I don't think she was even 2 years old, but she was determined to help her mother carry newly purchased items from the farmers' market. The bag in her left hand contained a half-pint of home canned goodness. The bag in her right hand held a produce item.

As the toddler walked down the midway, she appeared to be more concerned about the bag in her left hand, keeping it just a fraction of an inch above the ground. The other bag, which often dragged along the ground, contained something that was just a bit smaller than a softball and orange/red in color. We have no idea if it was a large tomato (which a couple vendors were still selling on such a chilly day) or a small pumpkin.

Customers and vendors alike stopped and watched, smiled and said, "Isn't that cute."

I had been hoping to take a photo of the child, to accompany this column, and the mother was gracious enough to allow me to do so.

The Hodag Farmers' Market will hold its last market of this year from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park.
