Lake Tomahawk town board views building plans
Electors will vote on proposed Sloan addition in November
Town chairman George DeMet, who first introduced the idea in April, provided an update on the proposed expansion Wednesday that included drawings from Al Szymanski with MSA Professional Services.
"It's approximately a 900-square-foot addition," DeMet said, looking at Szymanski's drawings which include floor and site plans. "It would contain offices, a small vestibule entrance and a bathroom and a heating system."
Because of the age of the building - the Sloan Community Center was originally constructed in 1963 - Szymanski has indicated a firewall would have to be installed between the addition and the current building to keep the structure compliant with building codes, he added.
DeMet also noted that the current bathrooms in the community center "aren't exactly up to code."
"If we were to add on to it, that would bring us under all new regulations and inspections and we would have to do a lot of remodeling of this particular building that would be extremely expensive," he said. "So, he (Szymanski) suggested we put in the firewall and we build it as a separate entity. That way, we can avoid a lot of those extra expenses that would come into play."
DeMet said an exit in the Peterson Room - where the town board meets - would serve as an entrance to the addition. There would also be a separate entrance.
"There would be offices for the clerk, treasurer and chairman which would be a lot bigger than what we've got," he said.
At the moment, there's no cost estimate for the addition.
"I have no idea what that's going to run," DeMet said. "Nine hundred square feet, it's hard to say."
Cost information will be available for the public to see at the town's budget meeting Nov. 28, he added.
That's when town electors will vote on the building addition.
DeMet said at least two large trees would have to be removed and the grinder pump for the building's sanitary system would have to be relocated.
The town's "Centennial Tree" will remain.
"I think it looks like a pretty good plan myself," DeMet said. "I think it would be a great thing we could do."
Currently, the town chairman, town clerk and town treasurer share a very small space at the opposite end of the Sloan Community Center.
"We can get out of the shower room we're presently in," DeMet said.
