Last year 586 students from across the Northwoods submitted posters. In all, 21 school and 34 classes took part in the contest. Each year students and teachers alike show more interest in the contest, a fun and creative way to get the word out about the dangers of invasive species.
The contest is open to students in grades four through eight. The contest covers 18 counties, but any student from Wisconsin is welcomed to participate. Trophies for first, second and third place, are awarded in each age group. Ribbons are awarded for Honorary Mention as well as Best Slogan.
In the past, competition for Best Slogan has been quite heated, with judges having a hard time not only choosing the winning posters, but also the best slogan.
The first place winner in each grade category also receives a classroom party (a $30 value) and that student's school library will receive a natural science field guide. Winning posters are featured in a free calendar that is distributed to schools and libraries across the Northwoods.
Participating teachers have a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards.
The deadline for posters is Wednesday, May 1, 2019, but entries are being accepted now, so there is no need to wait to enter the contest.
More information can be found on the Oneida County Land and Water Website www.oclw.org or by calling the Land and Water Department at 715-369-7835.
Posters must be accompanied by an entry form and can be mailed to the department or dropped off at one of the many locations in the 18-county participation area. A full list of drop-off locations can be found on the website.
