The clinicians and associates at Howard Young Medical Center now have an all new and improved location to provide therapy services with the recently completed renovation of the Rehabilitation Services Department located on the hospital's first floor, according to an Ascension press release.
As part of a five-million-dollar improvement project which also redesigned the facility's Emergency Department, the Rehabilitation Services makeover included fully updating interior finishes and remodeling of designated spaces to improve safety, patient experience and workflow.
"Our patients are benefiting from a more calm and restful environment with enhanced and dedicated areas for care," said Kelly Hamerla, OTR, Rehabilitation Services Manager at Howard Young. "This project significantly enhanced treatment rooms and added dedicated pediatric areas."
Among the changes in the rehab department is the addition of the H ZeroGĀ® Gait and Balance System by Aretech.
"Designed to advance rehabilitation outcomes for patients, ZeroG is a robotic body-weight support system that offers fall protection and dynamic body-weight support as patients practice functional activities," said Mark Killian, a physical therapist at Howard Young Medical Center. "This can include simulating activities like learning how to anticipate a loss of balance, walking, getting up from a chair, getting off the floor and walking up stairs."
ZeroG can be used with patients up to 450 pounds and monitors an individual's movements from above on a ceiling track while providing fall protection and dynamic body-weight support. Dynamic body-weight support can be set to offload the person's weight by up to 200 pounds making them feel lighter as if they were in a "reduced gravity" environment.
"This allows them to practice therapy at high-intensity levels sooner after an injury," said Killian. "As the individual progresses, the amount of dynamic support can be decreased so the person does more under their own capabilities."
For Roger Kruse of Loganville the convenience and availability of rehabilitation services at Howard Young and the use of ZeroG allowed him to get back on his feet faster after a knee injury.
"When using the ZeroG, I felt protected and without the fear of falling, I had the confidence to push harder in my rehabilitation sessions with Mark," said Kruse.
Howard Young Medical Center is the first hospital in Wisconsin to use the latest ZeroG Version 3. The addition of the ZeroG was made possible as the result of the support of the Howard Young Foundation.
"This is another example of the Foundation supporting the innovative care provided by our clinicians and associates," said Sandy Anderson, President of Howard Young Medical Center. "We are grateful for the community's support of this project."
Howard Young's Rehabilitation Services associates will show off the department at a free open house Saturday, Dec. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. Guests will tour the department and learn more about services available. Attendees will also be able to meet "flying reindeer" on the ZeroG balance system. Pictures with Santa and other activities and refreshments will also be available.
