The Brown Street greenspace, named The Plaza, is getting more Christmas lights this year thanks to a generous donation from pharmacist Howard Backe, former owner of the Apothecary.

According to a Downtown Rhinelander Inc. press release, Backe decided to make the contribution as a way of thanking the community for its support of his business over the past 40 years.

"His way of giving back to the community has been to support some of the programs in the downtown area," the release states. "One of those areas is across the street from his business, The Plaza, he wanted to add some holiday spirit to that space. Three years ago, he donated money to purchase the lights for The Plaza - that blue aura that you see from way up or down the street. This year since the trees have grown, he donated more money to purchase additional lights and add another color to the scheme. Howard has also been very supportive of the hanging flower baskets that hang from the street poles every spring. If the Downtown group fell short of having enough funds to cover the costs of the flower baskets, Howard was always there to pick up whatever balance remained for the plants, the watering and the fertilizer."

Backe believes that supporting your local community is important and he has given back to the community in many ways, the release states. His challenge for others in the community is to find something you want to support and promote it. As when that happens, everyone benefits.
