A large group of runners kicked off the holiday season and supported some good causes Thanksgiving morning in the inaugural Rhinelander Turkey Trot, held in the courthouse district of the city. A total of 162 runners, dressed in everything from track and field uniforms to full-on turkey suits, took to the streets on a 20-degree morning for a 5K run. Pictured: Gina Scheuer of Rhinelander, dressed for the occasion, runs toward the finish line. "Anything over 100 (runners) I thought was going to be pretty good," said Kyle Rogers, one of the organizers of the event, which raised money for the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) and the Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Rogers said the goal was to raise roughly $500 for each of the organizations through runner registrations and business sponsorships of the event. While he did not have the final numbers Thursday morning, Rogers said, "I think we're in that neighborhood." Rogers thanked his co-race organizers, Andy and Jayme Wyss, St. Mark Lutheran Church, race sponsors and all the runners who raced on "what's more of a Jingle Bell Run type day than a Turkey Trot. You never know what you're going to get up here in late November." For more photos and results, see page 15. (Jeremy Mayo/River News)
