ArtStart announces opening reception for winter exhibitions
An opening reception for the exhibitions is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1. Both featured artists will speak briefly about their work and Chicago musician Nathan Tolzmann, whose original music is part of Hamlow's exhibition, will perform following the artist talks, according to an ArtStart press release.
Featured in the Glass Gallery is Out My Window, the work of Wabeno artist Colleen Ansbaugh. A nationally recognized fiber artist, Ansbaugh was most recently featured in Quilt National 2017: The Best of Contemporary Quilts. Her life-long love of textiles began when she learned to sew as a child, the release states. She has been widely published, and her work has been exhibited in many venues, including the United Nations, NASA, Geneva, Switzerland; the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, and in numerous International Quilt Festivals. The Out My Window series is a colorful travelogue of what Ansbaugh saw out the car window on her journeys through "Up North" Wisconsin. She uses nature as a source of inspiration, hand dyeing fiber and cloth to create her art.
David Hamlow's exhibition Dark Airing will be on display in the Stevens Street Gallery.
"Hamlow's installation is viewed in black light and created from all recycled materials," the release states. "Drawing in equal parts from dream logic, psychological diagrams, Buckminster Fuller geodesic utopias, and hobo symbolic language, this immersive environment asks the viewer to become part of the art."
"Art is everywhere you look," said Hamlow. "It's part of everything you do-your clothes, your room, your car." Adding to the enveloping feeling of the exhibition is a musical score created by musician Nathan Tolzmann specifically for this exhibition.
Tolzmann will perform live at 6:15 p.m. following the gallery talks. He is a multi-instrumentalist active in Chicago underground music and a founding member of the band Jumpsuit, best known for recording the official Chicago Cubs Victory Song.
There is no admission fee for the opening reception or concert, however donations are appreciated.
Light refreshments will be served with a cash beer and wine bar.
Out My Window and Dark Airing will be on display at ArtStart now through Jan. 12, 2019. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. For more information about this exhibition or ArtStart call 715-362-4328 or visit the website artstartrhinelander.org.
