After more than two decades on the sidelines at Rhinelander High School, coach Dan Millot is hanging up his whistle.

The long-time boys' and girls' soccer coach announced Monday evening he is stepping away from the programs.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of my decision to step down as head soccer coach for Rhinelander High School," Millot wrote in an email to RHS activities director Brian Paulson, confirming his decision. "I have loyally served for over two decades in the capacity of Head Coach for the girls and boys programs. During this time my coaching staff and I have built a winning program that is respected in our our (sic) community, our conference and around the state of Wisconsin. I take great pride in the accomplishments of our teams and the hundreds of student athletes that have built this program."

Millot, 55, said he is stepping down for personal reasons but will continue to serve the program until the school hires his replacement.

"I'm looking forward to the next chapter that lies before me," Millot told the River News. "The past two-plus decades have been very rewarding, very challenging, and I think I'm at the stage in my life where I want to try some new things. Sometimes change is good and I can say that, as I leave both programs, that I'm leaving two solid programs - programs that have talent. I think that whoever ends up taking my place - either the boys' or the girls' program, or both - will have a step up on things because of how solid I believe the program is right now."

Millot is the only coach the girls' soccer team has known since its inception. He's coached both squads since 1996.

Millot's teams have experienced great success, especially since joining the Great Northern Conference. The Hodags have won six GNC girls conference championships and six GNC boys' championships.

Millot guided the RHS girls' soccer team to WIAA state tournament appearances in 2014 and 2015 and his teams appeared in five sectional finals overall - three in girls' soccer and two in boys' soccer.

"Thank you for all your work," Paulson said in a reply to Millot, shared with the media. "RHS soccer was very lucky to have a coach that was fully invested and willing to sacrifice a lot of time to build a championship program. As a coach you were compelled, driven, and relentless. Thanks for all your hard work and support!"

The Hodag girls' team went 12-7-0 last spring and finished second in the GNC before losing to Rice Lake 2-1 in the Division 3 sectional finals. The RHS boys went 8-6-3 this fall, finished third in the GNC and lost to Waupaca in overtime in the WIAA regional finals.
