New physical therapy program at Marshfield Clinic treats Parkinson's disease
The BIG program was formulated from the existing LVST program, which helps with speech for people with Parkinson's, the release states. This evidence- based program targets Parkinson's disease with an intensive amplitude (BIG - bigness of movement) oriented approach, adapted to each patient.
Documented research utilizing the LSVT BIG program demonstrates:
• Faster walking with bigger steps,
• Improved balance,
• Increased trunk rotation,
• Improvements in activities of daily living such as bed mobility,
• Translation of the movements in to better quality movement in everyday activities.
Marshfield Clinic Woodruff Center physical therapist Zachary Troyer and physical therapist assistant Jeanne Sykora have recently become certified as LSVT BIG therapists.
"I found there is a surprising link between the fundamental movement patterns that I work on developing with the teenage athletes I treat, to the movement patterns I help re-establish in patients that have neurological conditions such Parkinson's," Troyer said. "That is one of the reasons why getting LSVT BIG certified was important to me. I am looking forward to rooting this program into my daily patient care and being able to offer this new program to the Minocqua-Woodruff community."
The sessions are one-on-one, consisting of four weeks of four one-hour sessions, for a total of 16 sessions. Included is daily homework and daily carryover activities designed to reach the patient's individual goals.
