Six members of the Hodag varsity team took home awards, led by senior Brooke Mork, who was voted the team's most valuable player.
Junior setter Aryssa Zasada was named the team's most improved player, senior libero Mikayla Evenstad won the team's Best Defense award, sophomore Kahlie Arneson won the Best Offense award and sophomore Hannah Worachek won the hustle award.
Mork led the team with 34 kills in Great Northern Conference play. Her 55 digs were also a team-best. She served 80 percent of the season with a team-best nine aces.
Arneson led the team with 20 blocks, finishing among the top 10 in the GNC in blocks per set. She had 22 kills and 17 digs on the season.
Zasada was the team's primary setter much of the season and recorded a team-best 55 set assists. Her 34 digs ranked fourth on the team in conference play and her .877 serving percentage was tops among Hodag players who had at least 30 serves in conference play.
Evenstad had 30 digs in conference play and was a perfect 28 for 28 serving before a knee injury cost her the final seven matches of the conference season. Worachek had 19 kills, 54 digs and nice aces on the season. In presenting Worachek with the Hustle award, Scheuermann jokingly said Worachek led the team in another statistical category - bruises.
"Without a doubt, our hustle award goes to Hannah," she said. "She was always on the floor diving, no matter what and she'd come to me every practice with a new bruise to show me. She said she wasn't stopping for anything."
Junior Julie Breivogel received the team's coaches award, which was chosen by the coaching staff.
"Her attitude was always wonderful on the bench, "Scheuermann said. "She was definitely a joy to have."
The Hodags went 1-38 on the season in a rebuilding year after graduating much of its 2017 varsity roster. Scheuermann was promoted from junior varsity coach to the varsity position following Kathy Wawrzynowicz's retirement.
"We definitely had a lot of ups and downs this year," Scheuermann said during the banquet. "We had only two seniors. One of them (Evenstad) found out she tore her ACL, so she wasn't able to play toward the end of the season ... We moved players around all season. It was definitely a work in progress."
With a number of underclassmen returning, and a more-structured offseason program, Scheuermann said she's looking for improvement from her team next year.
"For those ladies that are coming back next year, we definitely want to get into the weight room to strengthen up, so we can be stronger at the beginning of the season and not have to work on strength during (the year)," she said. "We can just work on conditioning that strength and more volleyball skills."
Scheuermann said there would be open gym, league and tournament opportunities available for her team during the offseason.
