James Williams Middle School students learned a lessson recently about character and the importance of giving back to the community.

According to a school district press release, Max Kaether and Draven Klaver of Mrs. Cirilli's eigth-grade homeroom devised a Bake-Off Challenge as part of the district's Character Education Program.

With the help of Mrs. Cirilli, their students sent out a challenge to all eighth grade homerooms asking them to participate in a bake-off. Participating homerooms teamed up and held bake sales during Homecoming week knowing that the team that raised the most money would get to decide where the entire sum would be donated, the release states.

The focus was to choose a local organization to help.

Students in Ms. Bowman's, Mrs. Cirilli's, Mrs. Erikson's, Mrs. Higgins', Mrs. Jorata's, Mrs. Pudlowski's and Mrs. Schommer's homerooms took part in the compeittion, with the team of Ms. Bowman and Mrs. Schommer's homeroom winning the bake-off and choosing the Oneida County Humane Society for the prize.

On Friday, Oct. 26, Amanda Haydon from the Oneida County Humane Society accepted a check for $742 from the eighth graders, who are already busy brainstorming who and how they can help next.
