First farmers market features microgreens

By Cassie Shefcik-

The first Hodag Farmers' Market of the season was held Saturday, May 26 and it started off with a bang.

There were smiles aplenty as vendors greeted each other and early shoppers on a lovely day in the park.

There was fresh produce (quite a large selection for so early in the season), bedding plants, canned goods, bakery items, maple syrup, honey, bird houses, and many other wonderful things.

One new vendor the Hodag Farmers' Market is happy to add is Cool Crop Farms from Harshaw. Cool Crop Farms will be primarily selling microgreens. Microgreens used to called sprouts but they are not grown in water (which can easily become contaminated) but are raised in sterile soil. Microgreens raised this way are healthier sprouts which, in turn, are healthier to eat.

For the first market, Cool Crop Farms brought nine different kinds of sprouts, which were cut and weighed while the customer waited and wrapped in natural, unbleached cheese cloth. This is the freshest way of harvesting for market and, since greens need aeration (hence the cheese cloth), the best way to transport the greens home. The microgreens are sold by the ounce but a discount will be given if sold by a bulk pound. Some of the greens available were Spicy Oriental Mustard, brussel sprouts, broccoli, radish, and sunflower. I never knew you could eat a sunflower sprout and now I plan on eating one or several very soon. Cool Crop Farms plans to have up to two dozen different kinds of microgreens as the season progresses.

Cool Crop Farms will also have locally foraged foods weekly and will explain how to prepare them for your gastronomic pleasure. Last week they had Fiddlehead ferns. Wild foods are not new at our market as several vendors also harvest on the wild side. Cool Crop Farms will also be setting up mushroom cultivation this summer.

Come to Pioneer Park on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and see what other wonderful things are locally raised, harvested and produced.
