The Rhinelander High School junior varsity golf team took first place against four other Great Northern Conference schools in an 18-hole invitational Tuesday at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook.

The Hodags were the only team to break 400. Their total of 397 was 30 strokes better than second-place Antigo.

Nick Sandstrom led the Hodags with a round of 96, which was good enough for third place overall on the day. Ryan Holly and Neil Mathews both shot 100, Nick Schiek shot 101 and Cooper Kovac and Anthony Klabunde both shot 123.

Four days prior at Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee, the Hodags finished fourth in a GNC match, but their score of 227 was only four strokes behind first-place Medford. Sandstrom paced the Hodags in the May 11 competition with a round of 50, Schiek and Harlan Wojtusik both shot 56s and Jake Losch carded a 65.

The Hodag JVs conclude their season Monday with a nine-hole match at Riverview Golf Course in Antigo.
