Vilas County sheriff Joe Fath said Friday police believe Chad A. Goll has been distributing heroin and was allegedly involved in a heroin overdose last week.
The homicide charge, however, stems from a March 22 heroin overdose in Eagle River.
Fath said the victim's name is Danny Norton, originally from Phelps but living in Eagle River at the time of his death.
"He overdosed, we believe, after Mr. Goll delivered heroin to him and he died as a result," Fath said, adding that the department is planning to refer other charges against Goll, involving last week's overdose death, to Vilas County attorney Martha Milanowski pending the outcome of toxicology and crime lab reports.
In the meantime, Goll's initial appearance on the homicide charge related to the Norton death - along with three other drug-related charges, including the manufacture, distribution or delivery of a controlled substance - took place Friday.
Bond was set at $25,000 cash. He remains in custody.
