Peoples State Bank hosts blood drive in memory of Rhinelander couple
By Kayla Thomason-
"I know that the bank always does a blood drive and the special meaning behind it for me is that (donated blood) gave my daughter extra days, weeks actually, three weeks longer to be with us, because of platelets that she had received," Palmer said.
A month after Heather's death, her husband Travis died unexpectedly. The couple left behind two young daughters.
Palmer was one of the first to register to donate blood at the Peoples drive, and it would have been her first time, however phlebotomists told her that her veins were too small and that she could try again in a week. She was disappointed but plans to try again.
She was thrilled to see many others donating blood in memory of her daughter and son-in-law.
"I'm feeling really great about (the community's support)," she said. "We have a lot of slots filled today."
There were 25 slots to fill and 17 people preregistered, which is a higher turnout than the bank normally gets for their blood drives.
Palmer said she hopes the Juedes Memorial blood drive becomes an annual event.
Barry Eckardt was one of the volunteers giving blood. He said he doesn't know the family, but likes to help others. He has donated blood 23 times through the Community Blood Center and tries to go as many times as he can.
"It's a way of giving back to my fellow human beings and just a good thing to do to help others out," he said.
