Wrestling club sends 5 to state
The club will be represented by Aiden Ostermann, Gavin Ostermann, Ashley Schmidt, Logan Schwinger and Abigale Swanson, all of whom placed either first or second in their weight classes in a regional qualifier March 17 in Merrill.
Aiden Ostermann and Schmidt were regional champions. Ostermann pinned Athens' Swayne Stencil in the championship match of the Boys' 2007-08, 81 pound weight class while Schmidt earned an 11-2 major decision over Waupaca's Caylin Johnson in the championship match of the Girls' 2006-08, 94-pound bracket.
In all 10 members of the Rhinelander Wrestling Club competed in the Merrill regional. Owen Kurtz placed third in his bracket. Gavin Snider-Dotter and Kameron Christian placed fourth. Delaino Zivko and Gavin Lorman also participated.
The youth state tournament began yesterday and concludes today at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
