For the first time ever, the Rhinelander High School DECA program has a person holding an officer position at the state level. Abigail Krueger was voted onto the Wisconsin DECA state officer team in the position of VP of Membership Development at the State Career Development Conference in Lake Geneva, March 4-7, 2018, according to a school district press release.

The position of VP of Membership Development has the responsibilities of helping Wisconsin DECA grow through recruiting efforts and promotions; must be willing and able to develop recruitment materials; be able to communicate the benefits of being a DECA member to advisors, students, and alumni; be willing to connect with chapters from around Wisconsin on social media, effectively communicate the positive aspects of DECA to business professionals; and build relationships with business partners in the local community and state. Other duties of a state officer are to professionally represent thousands of DECA members throughout state and growth of Wisconsin DECA during the term of office will depend on the performance of their duties. As a Wisconsin DECA state officer, Abigail will become a highly-trained, professional representative of our state association to business partners, school administrators, state level Boards of Governors, and National DECA representatives in order to communicate DECA's core attributes and values of competence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork, the release states.

Abigail started the application process back in December. The process to become a state officer is very lengthy. It started with the creation of a portfolio in which she communicated her accomplishments.

The portfolio included a statement of intent, high school transcripts, code of conduct and agreement to serve, social media code of conduct, resume, three letters of recommendation, and an advisor recommendation form as well as supporting documents of her accomplishments; this portfolio was due by Jan. 15. The next step in the process was advancing to the state officer screening on Feb. 10 at DeForest High School.

The screening was an opportunity to help the applicant work toward developing their understanding of DECA's guiding principles. This activity is designed to highlight how DECA is preparing its members to be academically prepared, community-oriented, professionally responsible experienced leaders.

At the screening, Abigail was involved in a small group activity and presentation as well as individual interviews, the release states.

The final step of the process was presenting to the voting delegates and business partners at the state conference. Abigail gave two speeches at the conference, one was a three-minute speech where the voting delegates played the role of marketing teachers and DECA advisors and the topic of the speech was seeking their support for every chapter to have 100 percent membership and to create a network between members and state officers. The second talk was a five-minute speech on her platform as it relates to the specific duties of the office she was running for. Abigail's platform was assisting smaller chapters to grow in membership, therefore increasing the overall state membership.

DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
