To compete at the state level, swimmers must have achieved a pre-determined qualifying time in their event during the course of the regular club season. Athletes competing were Jack Antonuk, 13, Brock Arrowood, 10, Joseph Heck, 15, Thaddeus Heck, 15, Lisa Kennedy, 14, Samson Shinners,10, Abi Winnicki, 11 and Makenna Winnicki, 15.
"Having eight kids qualify for state is something RSC hasn't done in a very long time," club coach Megan Cihla said. "I couldn't be more proud to be a part of their successes and all they have achieved this season. Half of these athletes are bottom of their age group so qualifying for state wasn't something they were even expecting to do. This just shows the versatility of these athletes and how wonderfully talented they are when they set goals for themselves. "
There were two RSC records broken during state competition. Abi Winnicki broke the 50-yard butterfly record that had been in place since 1991 with a time of 29.25 seconds. Jack Antonuk broke the 100 butterfly record with his time of 59.74. Winnicki also achieved a qualifying time for USA Swimming Central Zone competition in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:34.99.
Next up for the club is the Midwest Regional meet held at the University of Minnesota April 7 and 8.
