Land and Water Conservation Speaking and Poster Contest winners move on to state
This year, students from elementary and middle schools competed in the two contests. It is always a popular event and some teachers have included participation in the contest as part of their yearly, class curriculum.
This year's theme for the poster contest was "Watersheds: Our Water, Our Home." Area students submitted artwork to Oneida County and posters were judged Jan. 23.
Besides the winners, 18 posters in the middle and junior divisions received honorable mention ribbons. Further, Kyleah Hartman's winning poster also took a first place trophy at the area competition held on Feb. 9, in Wisconsin Rapids. Her poster moves on to be judged at the State Competition on March 14. A slideshow of artists and speakers can be viewed at www.oclw.org.
The Conservation and Environmental Awareness Speaking Contest was held on Jan. 25, at the Oneida County Courthouse. A nice crowd gathered to watch and listen to students give their speeches on topics such as citizen-based monitoring, hazardous waste, crown vetch and the emerald ash borer.
First place winner Kaya Szews, with her speech titled "Homicidal Hazardous Waste," advanced to the area competition on Feb. 9, where she also placed first. She will deliver her speech at the state Competition in Lake Geneva on March 14.
The senior speaker, Martin Hoger, placed first with his speech titled: "An Army of One, Citizen Based Monitoring."
