Local woman raising money to compete in Miss Wisconsin pageant
By Kayla Thomason-
A number of fundraisers will be held over the coming weeks as Vernida Boykin hopes to defray some of the costs of competing in the preliminaries for the 2019 Miss Wisconsin USA competition.
Boykin, 19, participated in the Miss Teen USA pageant circuit for several years but has aged out of that competition. She said she wants to use the Miss USA pageant to raise awareness about mental illness. If she makes it to the top five and final three she will have to make a speech.
"I recently had a time when I was in high school and I had attempted suicide and then just thinking about mental illness and how it affected people made me really want to express that and get it out there because not many people talk about it," she explained, adding that Miss Wisconsin USA offers contestants an opportunity to raise awareness about a variety of topics dear to their hearts.
"They spread awareness about stuff that people don't normally talk about and they help get it out there in a way most people wouldn't think of doing," she said.
Brat Sale and Bake Sale
The first fundraiser for Boykin will be a brat sale at Trig's Brat Hut from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 30.
A bake sale is also planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 4 at Hodag Park. People will find cakes, cookies, brownies and other goodies baked by Boykin, her mother and a few others.
There will also be a community photo shoot at 5 p.m. at Hodag Park. It's a group photo of Boykin with anyone who would like to wish her well.
Pageant Fundraiser Dance - July 14
A dance will be held at the Pine Lake Town Hall from 1 to 6 p.m. July 14. Guests can enjoy pulled chicken or sloppy joes, potato salad, chips, pickles, soda or water. Cost is $6 per plate.
There will be raffles, drawings and music. Raffle tickets are $1 each, five for $3, seven for $5, 10 for $8, 50/50 $10 arm to arm.
Some of the proceeds from the various fundraisers will also go to local charities such as Frederick Place, Special Olympics, and Oneida County Humane Society, for example.
The preliminaries
The preliminary rounds for Miss Wisconsin USA will be held Sept. 8 at the Fond Du Lac Performing Arts Center. The finals will be held the next day. People can follow Boykin on Instagram at nidalife.sendhelp, YouTube at Vernida Boykin, or Snapchat at vernidaslife.
