Laser Pros picked up its fifth win in its last six games, overcoming a sluggish start to defeat Tomahawk 14-8. Rhinelander Green bounced back from its lone loss of the season to defeat Merrill Red via the 10-run rule, 12-2.
Early on Monday it seemed as though Laser Pros may have had a bit of a hangover after knocking their intra-city rival, Rhinelander Green, from the ranks of the unbeaten three nights earlier. The Hatchets jumped on Laser Pros starter Jacob Schoppe for three runs in the first inning and two in the second to take an early 5-0 lead.
Laser Pros finally got the bats going in the bottom of the third inning as a two-run double by Joe Schneider and a bases-loaded double by Schoppe tied the game at 5 apiece.
Tomahawk regained the advantage in an error-aided three-run fourth, but Laser Pros took command for good with a six-spot in the bottom of the frame.
Alex Kubeny doubled with the bases loaded to bring Laser Pros within a run. Schoppe then tied the game on an RBI single. The two then took advantage of a couple of Tomahawk mistakes to give Laser Pros the lead. Kubeny scored following an errant pickoff attempt at third and Schoppe scored on a wild pitch. Michael Schramke hit an RBI groundout to score Caleb Shefveland to give Laser Pros an 11-8 lead.
The home team tacked on three more in the third. Nick Schiek reached on a dropped third strike and scored when Isaac Bixby's single was misplayed in center field. Tim Fox scored on an infield hit by Schneider and Bixby scored when Payton Johnson reached on an error.
Schneider finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Schoppe drove in four on a 2-for-4 night at the plate. Bixby and Schiek both added a pair of hits, and Johnson and Kubeny each had one, as Laser Pros outhit Tomahawk 11-8.
Fox got the win in relief. He scattered four hits and struck out four over the final four innings. All three runs he allowed were unearned. Schoppe recorded five strikeouts over the first three innings.
Rhinelander Green wins twice
There was no need for a big rally by the home team in Monday's nightcap as Rhinelander Green jumped on Merrill Red for eight runs in the first two innings and never looked back.
The Hodags hung up six runs in the first, with Walker Hartman's two-run double kickstarting the rally. Jesse Mahner added an RBI single, so did Jason Huseby and two more runs scored via errors.
Hartman added a two-run single in the second that made it 8-0 Rhinelander Green.
Quinn Lamers singled home a run in the fifth and the Hodags ended it via the mercy rule with three runs in the sixth. Ben Sinclair scored on an error, Ian Miller had an RBI single wand Hartman ended it on a bases loaded fielder's choice.
Hartman and Miller were working on a combined no hitter, until Merrill Red broke it up with an RBI single off Miller in the sixth. Hartman struck out three over three innings of scoreless baseball. Miller pitched three innings in relief, striking out four.
Hartman drove in five runs at the plate in a 2-for-4 effort. Miller was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Teagan Guckenberg, Mahner, Lamers, Jordan Kuczmarski and Huseby added hits as Rhinelander Green outhit Merrill Red 10-1.
One night later, Rhinelander Green beat Eagle River for the second time in five days, reaffirming its driver's seat position in the Senior League standings.
All the scoring was done in the first inning of a rainy contest won by the Hodags, 2-1 in Eagle River. Rhinelander Green and Eagle River entered the night even in the loss column with one loss each.
Rhinelander scored twice in the first inning as a single by Mahner drove in both Guckenberg and Hartman for what proved to be the winning runs.
Eagle River got a run back off starter Teagan Guckenberg in the bottom of the first, but could do no further damage. Guckenberg allowed a run on a hit over 2 2/3 innings before turning the ball over to Lamers, which kept Eagle River's bats quiet again. Five days after allowing a run over 6 2/3 innings against the Eagles, Lamers pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and striking out three.
The Hodags outhit Eagle River 5-3 in the contest. Lamers, Hartman, Mahner, Devyn Orth and Huseby had the hits.
Rhinelander Prep sweeps Tomahawk Gold
Rhinelander's Prep League team got off to fast starts in both games Tuesday night as it swept a doubleheader from Tomahawk Gold 10-2 and 8-1.
The Hodags led 9-1 after three innings in the first contest and 7-1 after three innings in game two.
The top half of Rhinelander's lineup did most of the damage in both games. Kolby Ridderbusch was 3-for-3 with an RBI in game one while Cal Laggis, Mason Davis and Sam Schneider collected two hits each. In game two the top seven hitters in Rhinelander's lineup - AJ Turek, Ridderbusch, Laggis, Ryan Jamison, Davis, Schneider and Logan Schmoeger each collected one hit.
Jamison struck out five batters over three innings to earn the win in game one while Davis struck out three over the final two innings. Both pitchers allowed a run on two hits.
Schneider pitched two hitless innings in the second game before giving way to Ridderbusch, who allowed an unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts over the last three frames.
Tomahawk's lone run came in the third inning and Rhinelander third baseman made a nice grab on a sinking line drive to prevent Tomahawk from scoring any more runs in the inning. The Hodags scored four times in the bottom half of the frame to take firm control of the contest.
