EAGLE RIVER - After starting the 2018 summer season with a second place finishes at a tournament in Auburndale on June 2, the Northwoods Fastpitch 14U squad - a co-op of players from the Rhinelander, Lakeland and Eagle River areas - took the field for a doubleheader against Hurley at Northland Pines High School last Thursday.

The tournament is in preparation for a big tournament at the school this weekend.

Hurley doubleheader

A nine-run inning by Hurley in the top of the second blew thefirst game open early, as Northwoods dropped the opener, 17-1 in five innings.

Hurley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on, before extending the lead in the second on just four hits.

Despite giving up 17 runs, Northwoods surrendered only six hits, but the damage was done with 15 walks.

Naomi Hamerla went 2 for 2 in the game for Northwoods, recording the team's only hits of the game.

In the second game of the day, Northwoods came out looking for some revenge after giving up a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single.

Northwoods took the lead in the top of the second thanks a lead-off triple by Hamerla, followed by an RBI single by Kylie White and another RBI single by Addie DeMeyer two batters later.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Hurley came back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead it would never relinquish in a 10-3 win.

DeMeyer started the inning by allowing three walks in the first four batters, while Hurley caught the defense sleeping on two occasions as the runner quickly rounded first and headed to second before Northwoods could react in time.

Northwoods attempted to bounce back from the inning as Hamerla tripled once again and was brought home yet again on a sacrifice fly by White to trim the lead to 6-3.

DeMeyer also rebounded by retiring the side in order in the fourth, and after allowing two runs in the fifth, she earned three consecutive outs.

Halle Kerner, Grace Wittkopf and Paige Richie also executed a 6-4-3 double play in the sixth inning.

DeMeyer struck out five batters in defeat.
