Hodag Run for Your Life a blend of fun and exercise
By Kayla Thomason-
The half-marathon, sponsored by Nicolet National Bank, will start at 8 a.m. while the 10K, sponsored by Habush, Habush & Rottier S.C., will start at 8:45 a.m.
The 5K run/walk and stroller division, sponsored by Superior Diesel, will commence at 9:15 a.m.
The course is the same as last year. Racers will take off from Hodag Park, head down W. Monico Street to Eagle Street, and take a left to Lake Creek Road which turns into County Hwy. W. The halfway point for the 5K will be at the Jail House tavern, where there will be a water and aid station. The 5K runners will turn around and head to the finish line. Those running the 10K and half-marathon will continue down River Road. The 10Kers' turnaround point will be just past Forest Lane.
Half-marathoners will continue down River Road to Journeys End Road and then back to Hodag Park.
Registration forms, brochures and course maps are available at the YMCA of the Northwoods. People can register at the YMCA or online for an extra fee at www.active.com.
Proceeds from the event go to the YMCA annual Support Campaign, which allows the YMCA of the Northwoods to continue to deliver low-cost programming to the local community.
Event coordinators said they expect about 250 participants in the adult races.
Chase the Hodag
Youth can get in on the fun with the Chase the Hodag run, sponsored by the Rhinelander Kiwanis Club. At 10:30 a.m. the children will chase the Hodag mascot through the park.
This event is for children 12 and under. Registration will take place between 7:30 and 10:15 a.m. near the beach house. The first 200 children will receive a free race T-shirt.
New attraction
New this year is The Kids Carnival, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the grassy area near the beach house at Hodag Park.
"We're hoping to get local businesses and non-profits to come help us with that, put it on," said the YMCA's Aquatics, Youth and Family Director Matt Steingraber.
A variety of carnival games such as ring toss are planned, depending on which businesses and organizations participate in the fair.
The organizers hope that the carnival will help keep the children occupied as their parents receive their awards and that it will add another family-friendly aspect to the event.
The Kids Carnival used to be held at the YMCA shortly before the Hodag Run for Your Life, but this year it has been moved to the park.
"I'm hoping it will be another draw that provides more for young kids," Steingraber said, adding that he hopes it will also draw more children to Chase the Hodag.
"Go out and have fun, and we'll hopefully enjoy some sunny weather that day," said Stephanie Ruckheim, senior director of wellness and community initiatives, "Thank you for helping make a difference in our community."
