Five Democratic candidates for governor of Wisconsin - Tony Evers, Matt Flynn, Mike McCabe, Kathleen Vinehout and Dana Wachs - participated in a forum Saturday, June 16 at The Waters in Minocqua.

An Aug. 14 primary will determine which Democrat will challenge the state's current governor, Republican Scott Walker, in November. Walker is running for a third term as the state's chief executive.

The forum was sponsored by the Minocqua-based Northwoods chapter of Our Wisconsin Revolution, the North Central Labor Coalition, Northwoods Progressives, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and the Democratic parties of Oneida, Vilas, Langlade, Lincoln, Iron, Florence and Price counties.

Over the course of the four-hour forum, the topics of the environment, education, the economy and health care were addressed.

Audience members asked questions and the candidates were each given two minutes to respond.

Each candidate was also given two minutes to introduce themselves.

Jackie Cody, the forum's moderator, said the five candidates were chosen by committee not because of politics or ideology but due to the logistics of organizing such an event.

"It's the constraints of the accommodations in the Northwoods," she said. "This (The Waters) was the best space for the counties involved to meet and can't hold 10 candidates with 100 people at any one time and get anything done."
