Five kids made it to state for the School District of Rhinelander's team and four adults qualified for Rhinelander Special Olympics 205.
SDR athletes
Paige Appling, Marshall Barlowski, Daray Hawes, Stephen Herrmann and Hannah Umland qualified for the state competition under the SDR banner by placing first, second or third in their division for in a regional competition held last month in Merrill.
Marshall Barlowski earned a first-place medal in the mini javelin throw and a second-place medal in the shot put. Daray Hawes competed in the softball throw and medaled with a second-place finish. Paige Appling earned a second-place medal in the shot put throw and also competed in the 100 meter run where she placed fifth. Hannah Umland brought home the bronze medal in the mini javelin throw while also competing in the 100-meter run where she finished in second place.
Rhinelander 205
AJ Larson earned second place in both the 100-meter run and the standing long jump.
Ashley Mathy took first place in the 400-meter run and softball throw, as well as second place in the 200-meter run. Darrick Nelson placed first in the 100-meter run and fifth in the 200 run. Hannah Karstedt took home first-place in the 50-meter run and fifth place in the standing long jump.
The coaches for Special Olympic Athletics for 2018 were Rod Ankrom and Anna Mathy.
