About 20 people gathered at the city's reservoir site off County Road G Thursday evening for a flag retirement ceremony conducted by Rhinelander VFW Post 3143. A spokesman for the VFW said the public turned in over 900 worn, faded or torn American flags by Wednesday and 138 more flags were dropped off Thursday. Ceremonies such as this one were held across the nation on Flag Day. The United States Flag Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
