Logan Schmoeger, Cal Laggis and Logan Cook each tossed two innings of hitless ball in a game that was called midway through the sixth inning after running up against the 13-year-old league's mandated two-hour time limit.
Meanwhile, Rhinelander took advantage of some erratic Merrill pitching to score three runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Mason Davis singled in Sam Schneider in the first inning, while Laggis and Davis each scored on wild pitches. In all, the first seven batters of the inning reached thanks to a combination of singles, walks and a hit batsman.
The Hodags added a run in the second on an RBI groundout by Schneider and tacked on two more in the third inning as Schmoeger singled home Davis and later scored on a passed ball.
An error and a couple of wild pitches allowed Merrill to score in the third and an error on a relay throw to third base allowed the Blues to tack on one more run in the fifth. Merrill's baserunners in the contest came courtesy of eight walks and an error.
Schmoeger walked two and struck out two in two innings of work for the Hodags. Laggis earned the win in relief, pitching two innings of hitless ball. Cook also worked two innings and struck out one. All runs allowed were unearned.
Rhinelander turned a pair of double plays in the contest, including a game-ender in the top of the sixth.
Kolby Ridderbusch, Davis, Schmoeger and Kaden Chillemi recorded hits for Rhinelander in the game, with Schneider, Davis and Schmoeger providing the RBIs.
The win moved Rhinelander to 2-2 early in the prep league season ahead of a game at league co-leader Eagle River Red on Wednesday that concluded after deadline.
Senior League
Rhinelander's two Senior League teams opened the season with wins last Friday with Rhinelander Green defeating Brandon 12-1 and Laser Pros International doubling up Three Lakes 10-5.

Both teams will play at Stafford Field on Friday, with Rhinelander Green taking on Three Lakes and Laser Pros facing Merrill Blue. The doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m.
