Volunteers at Ascension Eagle River Hospital recently spearheaded a fundraising effort to replace an ambulance at the hospital as well as purchase two power lift cots.

Between the volunteer fundraising, facilitated by the Howard Young Foundation Auxiliary, and a matching amount from Ascension, this was a $250,000 investment for EMS services at the Eagle River facility.

A blessing event commemorating the ambulance going into service was held Wednesday at Ascension Eagle River Hospital.

Hospital officials, volunteers and members of the community gathered to celebrate the occasion.

"This really demonstrates the support that this hospital has from the community," Ascension president Sandy Anderson said. "The auxiliary has been real advocates for our hospital and those that it serves."

The auxiliary raised the $150,000 donation via its thrift store in Eagle River. Terry Kressin, auxiliary chair, noted their organization goal is to support the local hospital and all it does for the community and its visitors.

"We were so proud to donate," she said. "And it was so desperately needed."

The ambulance that left service is still in use in the Northwoods.

It was donated to the Russell Volunteer Fire Department in Lincoln County, which recently reinstated its emergency services.
