While they attend different schools for now, Pelican and Crescent Elementary School students will eventually come together when they reach the higher grades. That doesn't mean they have to wait until then to go to know each other, however.

Throughout the school year, Ms. Megan Biscobing's and Mrs. Wendy Deitz's first graders were pen pals. Each month, the students practiced their writing skills by writing friendly letters to each other, their teachers report. They got to know each other by asking and answering questions in their correspondences. They learned about each other's pets, families, interests and hobbies.

On Tuesday, May 29, the two classes finally met in person at the Cedric A. Vig OutdoorClassroom (CAVOC).

While visiting CAVOC, the pen pals enjoyed a digital breakout session with Ms. Biscobing where they worked together as a team, using Chromebooks, to solve many brain teasers about dinosaurs.

With Mrs. Deitz, the students made salt landscapes using colored salt and colored chalk.

The students had to carefully color their salt with chalk and put it into small, glass jars. The result was a beautiful landscape which the students took home.

Community helpers Ted and Pam Howland taught the students about camp fire safety.

The Howlands showed the students how to safely build and put out a fire. The students also learned how to cook over a fire with an adult, while they made and enjoyed s'mores.

The day ended with a clean-up walk in which the students paired up with their pen pals to pick up garbage. The pen pals worked cooperatively to pick up litter while having a great time. Some of the pen pals even exchanged addresses to continue to write during the summer.
