Two Nicolet National Bank employees from Rhinelander are no strangers when it comes to volunteering. Barb Harvey and Mickey Hansen have been giving back to their community since 2013. For the past five years, they have donated their time at the Oneida County Fair.

Both women started volunteering in a financial capacity, counting cash and making deposits, fair officials said in a press release. After being in that position for three years, the fair committee decided to go in a different direction and both women sought other volunteer positions at the fair. Neither Harvey nor Hansen wanted to discontinue volunteering because it was fun and made them feel good to give back to their community, the release states. Since that time, they have enjoyed working in the courtesy cart area.

Why do these women enjoy volunteering at the Oneida County Fair?

"Meeting the people and helping them get from point A to point B is so much fun," Harvey said.

As she transports the fairgoers, she enjoys engaging in conversation with them about the fair and what activities they want to participate in. Hansen delights in seeing the happy smiles on the attendees' faces as she transports them. The women said Friday nights are particularly busy as many visitors take in the fish fry.

"I like to think that when I've dropped someone off that I've left them with a positive and lasting experience," Harvey said.

For Harvey and Hansen, volunteering has created a sense of connection and bonding.

"Seeing everyone working together as a team and watching everything come together is a very rewarding experience," Hansen said.

"To help make the fair successful, you need the involvement of the community. Even when someone volunteers a small amount of time, it makes a difference. Every little bit helps," Harvey added.

The Oneida County Fair offers volunteers a variety of perks. Each volunteer will be given food vouchers and a ride pass. In addition, on Aug. 12, the Oneida County Fair will host a thank you party for volunteers.

The Oneida County Fair provides exciting entertainment for people of all ages with high-quality, educational and entertaining experiences within a safe and healthy environment, the release states.
