Eichhorn maintains 1-stroke lead entering final round of State Am
After a big surge late in the third round, Hunter Eichhorn is atop the standings heading into the final round after shooting three-under for the day and 10-under for the tournament.
Birdies on two holes in the back nine - including one on the difficult par-3 16th - allowed the Marquette University player to stay on top.
"It was a solid day," Eichhorn said. "I didn't hit many great shots, I hit a lot of good shots to put myself 30-40 feet from the hole and just two-putted for par and just tried to make it stress-free."
After a tough end to the second round, Thomas Longbella wasn't worried about it carrying over into Wednesday and he was right.
Longbella battled for the lead most of the day, while bogies on two of the last three holes kept him one stroke off Eichhorn for the lead in the tournament.
Still, Longbella made a few stellar shots simply to make bogey on the final holes of the tournament, which keeps him in the hunt for the tournament crown on Thursday.
"On 16 it came up five feet short of being really good and ended up being in a really tough spot," Longbella said. "On 18 I hit a really solid drive that just went too far. That's just kind of the way it goes and I'm moving on to tomorrow."
Brookfield native and Vanderbilt University standout Harrison Ott put his hat in the ring after a string of seven birdies in eight holes between holes 7 and 14.
Ott briefly took the lead in the tournament, but bogies on two of his last three holes dropped him to eight-under par, despite shooting a 68 for the day.
"I think my 52nd and 54th hole matters the same as my first and second of the tournament," Ott said. "It leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but at least knowing that I felt good - it was anything in my head - I'm fine with it."
Meanwhile, Tony Romo continued to get into a rhythm in his third day on the course.
Romo shot 70 for the round, which pulled him to even par for the week, but a tough first round may keep him out of the race for the championship as he sits tied for 17th heading into Thursday.
"You can't shoot 75 against these good players and think you have a chance to be in the mix," Romo said. "We'll try and see if we can shoot real low tomorrow to have a shot to win."
Piercen Hunt and Brock Hlinak remain in contention, tied for fourth and just four strokes off the lead.
Christopher Colla of Fond du Lac had the best score of the round with a 66 to put himself in a tie for sixth place at five-under.
