Eichhorn (68) surges into lead after two rounds at State Am
Players that shot a total of nine-over par for the first two rounds advanced to Wednesday's third round.
After 36 holes of golf, the leader is Carney, Mich. native Hunter Eichhorn, who came into the clubhouse with a score of 7-under par through two rounds after posting a 68 for the day.
The Marquette University golfer sank three birdies, along with an eagle on the 12th hole to surge into the lead.
"I just stuck to the same game plan as yesterday and I scored one better," Eichhorn said. "Honestly after today I knew I had to shoot a (low) number and I still didn't expect to be in the lead. So it was surprising to see that I was in the lead, but I'll take it."
Yesterday's leaders Thomas Longbella and Johnny Decker both struggled at times in the second.
Longbella held the lead for most of the second day but ran into some trouble in the final three holes, with a triple bogey and bogey in two of them as he fell back into second place, shooting 1-over par for the day and 5-under for the tournament.
"I hit a pretty golf shot on 16 that ended up in a terrible spot and it's kind of unfortunate," Longbella said. "I just picked the wrong club and ended up making triple (bogey). I hit the ball good all day and I'm not gonna let it affect me. It's a long tournament, I've got two days left."
Meanwhile, Decker shot four-over par over the final four holes Tuesday and dropped in a three-way tie for ninth place after two rounds.
Antigo native and current Onalaska resident Joe Weber surged on the back nine to move into a three-way tie with Brock Hlinak and Harrison Ott for third place at four-under par.
Meanwhile, after shooting 3-over par in his opening round, Tony Romo was on point in the second round.
Romo sank four birdies to finish the day one-under par and tied for 19th place at 2-over, overall.
"I hit the ball really well, I hit every fairway and I think I missed one green," Romo said. "So we had a chance to go real low, but three three-putts kept me from going real low."
Rhinelander's Josh Willis (+12), Ben Opsal (+14) and Kass Schoppe (+15) all failed to make the cut.
