Rhinelander Green beats Eagle River again to win Senior League
Just like Pittsburgh against Milwaukee, Rhinelander Green seems to have Eagle River's number this season.
The Hodags beat Eagle River for the fourth time in four tries Wednesday night, using a sixth-inning rally to defeat the Eagles 11-6 and claim the Senior League tournament championship at Stafford Field.
Rhinelander Green defeated Eagle River three times during the regular season, including a 7-5 triumph over the Eagles July 10 in the regular season championship game. Wednesday's final showdown was tied 5-5 in the sixth when Eagle River lost command of the strike zone.
Teagan Guckenberg started the frame with a leadoff single in the sixth before pitcher Logan Hissom issued three straight walks to Devyn Orth, Jordan Kuczmarski and Ben Sinclair. The last forced in a run and chased Hissom from the hill. Reliever Sam Johnson walked the first batter he faced, Jason Huseby, and then issued another run-scoring free pass to Ian Miller two batters later. Quinn Lamers followed with a fielder's choice to short that drove in Sinclair. Miller scored when Eagle River's attempt to double Lamers off first sailed wide, giving the Hodags a 10-5 lead.
Rhinelander Green, the visiting team by virtue of a coin flip, jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Miller and Lamers both reached base to start the game. Miller scored on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Mahner and Orth's two-out single to right scored Lamers.
Eagle River jumped in front in the second after Guckenberg allowed the first four batters to reach base in the second. Lamers came on in relief, but Isaac Vedder drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Aiden Lifschutz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Rhinelander responded with three runs in the third. Mahner singled home Lamers and then scored following an a wild pitch in and an error. Guckenberg tripled and scored when Orth sacrificed himself at second base on a double steal attempt.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Braden Neubauer and Johnson tied the game at 5 for the Eagles in the fourth.
Lamers pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief to beat Eagle River for the fourth time on the mound. He allowed three runs on five hits before reaching the league-mandated 95-pitch limit with two outs in the seventh inning. He struck out five and walked three. Mahner struck out Eagle River's Ty Springer to end the game.
Eagle River narrowly outhit Rhinelander 8-7. Mahner and Guckenberg each had two hits for the Hodags. Miller, Orth and Huseby had the other hits.
Rhinelander Green finished the season 15-1 between league and tournament play. Eagle River was 12-4 with all four of its losses coming to Rhinelander Green.
