The Wisconsin State Golf Association State Amateur Championship is set to bring some of the top golfers in the state to Minocqua Country Club beginning Monday, but one name may stand out more than the rest.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current lead analyst for NFL on CBS, Tony Romo, has qualified for the tournament and is scheduled to compete.

Romo is a native of Burlington and his passion for golf has been much talked about since he burst onto the scene as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys.

"Having Tony in the field certainly brings some added excitement to the event," WSGA Executive Director Rob Jansen said. "But more importantly, he's an excellent player who has been playing some great golf and has a chance to contend for the title."

The avid golfer has a handicap of +0.3 and has not only attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open in the past, but he also participated in the PGA Tour's Corales Punta Cana Resort and Club Championship last May in the Dominican Republic, but finished last in the field and missed the cut.

Romo tied for ninth in the WSGA Match Play Championship at Blackhawk Country Club last month, and also placed in the top 20 in both the Dairyland Open - an event he won back in 2012 - and Badgerland Invitational this summer. He also placed in the top 50 of the WPLA Ray Fischer 72-hole Amateur Championship at Janesville Riverside Golf Club last month, even breaking 70 during a round in the tournament.

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback is fresh off winning the American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe, Nev., last weekend after coming from four points back to win the modified Stableford event. Romo edged out Plover native and San Jose Sharks all-star Joe Pavelski for the win.

The following day, Romo also unsuccessfully attempted to qualify for the U.S. Amateur, finishing tied for 15th.

Romo is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. on Monday and at 2 p.m. on Tuesday for Round 2 of the WSGA Amateur Championship at Minocqua Country Club.
