Northwoods Fastpitch 14U wins Northern Chill tourney
Northwoods - a co-op of players from the Rhinelander, Eagle River and Minocqua areas - won all four of its games in the tournament, scoring at least 10 runs in three of those games.
Northern Chill Gray
In the first game of the tournament, Northwoods squared off with one of the host teams, Northern Chill Gray.
A monster third inning saw Northwoods score seven runs in a 10-5 victory.
Halle Kerner, Naomi Hamerla, Grace Wittkopf, Paige Richie and Kylee White pumped out five hits in a row, while Macy Holmes and Maddi Roeser also chipped in to account for seven singles in the third inning.
Hamerla, Richie and Roeser each finished the game 2 for 3, while Wittkopf was 2 for 2, as Northwoods racked up 11 hits in four innings of play.
Northern Chill Black
After a solid first win, Northwoods continued its offensive onslaught in the second game against Northern Chill Black, scoring six runs in the first inning of a 9-6 win.
Hamerla got things started with a double, followed by a Wittkopf single and another by White two batters later.
Northwoods scored three more in the second thanks to a single by Hamerla and a triple by Maddie Harris.
Northern Storm
The semifinals saw Northwoods jump out to another hot start, scoring five runs in the first inning of a 12-6 win over the Northern Storm of Marquette, Mich., to advance to the finals.
Addie DeMeyer earned a lead-off walk and was eventually driven in on a triple by Hamerla two batters later. Wittkopf followed with a single and walks by Richie and White led to runs after a single by Harris.
Northwoods scored seven more runs in the second inning, once again started by a lead-off walk by DeMeyer. Kerner would also walk and Hamerla connected on a single on the next at-bat.
Northwoods only needed four hits in the game to put up 12 runs to advance to the championship game of the tournament.
Championship game
The finals saw Northwoods face Northern Chill Gray in a rematch, but this time the game was a little tighter.
Northwoods registered a tournament-best 13 hits in a high-scoring 12-8 game to clinch the championship.
Kerner doubled in the first inning, followed by a Hamerla single and a Wittkopf triple to score three runs right off the bat.
Walks by Holmes, Roeser and DeMeyer started the second inning and Kerner cleaned up with a single before Hamerla cleared the bases with a triple. A Wittkopf base hit brought in Hamerla as part of a five-run frame.
DeMeyer and Kerner both singled and scored in the fourth, while Hamerla doubled in Kerner in the fifth inning.
Hamerla ended the game 3 for 4, while Kerner was 3 for 3 with four runs, while Wittkopf was also 3 for 4.
