Both of Rhinelander's Little League All-Star teams saw their tournament runs come to an end Wednesday, after falling to Wausau teams in their respective District 5 tournaments.

Rhinelander's 12U team was beaten by Wausau American for the second time in the tournament, 18-3 this go around, in an elimination game at Doepke Park in Wausau while Rhinelander's 10U team fell to Wausau National 10-6 at Remington Park in Antigo.

Wausau American, which beat Rhinelander's 12Us 12-1 in the tournament opener, jumped on the Hodags again Wednesday, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Americans then dropped the hammer in the second as the first 10 batters of the inning reached base and eventually came around to score as part of an 11-run frame.

Rhinelander scored three runs in the top of the third to fend off the 15-run rule, at least temporarily, but the Americans answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame to bring the game to an early end.

Sam Schoppe led off the third with a single for the Hodags and Rhinelander's runs came on back-to-back-to-back doubles by Jackson Freese, Owen Kurtz and Mason Baker with two outs in the inning.

Alex Rappley, Baker and James Heck pitched for Rhinelander in the contest.

It was a somewhat similar story in Antigo, where one bad inning did in the Hodag 10U side. Wausau National batted around in the fifth, scoring nine times, after Rhinelander had built a 5-1 lead.

Rhinelander took a 2-0 lead in the third as Hunter Bell tripled and scored on a groundout by Hank Kowieski. Abe Gretzinger followed with a double and scored on a Jackson Waydick base hit.

The Hodags padded their lead in the top of the fifth. Two-out hits by Connor Rappley and Jackson Turek, and a walk by Sawyer Bishop helped to drive in the runs.

Bell walked and scored for Rhinelander in the sixth, but the Hodags could draw no closer.

Bell, Kowieski and Gretzinger each had two-hit days at the top of the Rhinelander lineup. Waydick, Rappley, Turek and Aiden Flannery each had one hit.

Gretzinger allowed a run on three hits with seven strikeouts over four innings for Rhinelander.

Rhinelander finished third in the six-team 12U District 5 bracket and fifth in the 10U bracket.
