MOSINEE - Three years into its existence, Rhinelander is still the only champion the Great Northern Legion Conference has ever known.

The Post 7 Rebels locked up their third straight conference championship Wednesday with an 8-5 win over Mosinee at City Park. Martin Hoger's three-run home run sparked a two-out rally in the second inning and proved to be the final margin in the ball game.

The win moved the Rebels to 8-0 in the GNLC and assured no other team could catch them in conference play.

"That's the first goal we shoot for each year," Rebels manager Dan Huhnstock said of winning another conference title. "Now that we've got that wrapped up we can head toward our goal of being regional champs."

Rhinelander appeared to be on the verge of squandering an opportunity in the second after putting two aboard with nobody out. Bryce Schickert and Abe Laggis both struck out and Hoger was facing a 2-2 count against Mosinee starter Max Peterson.

Hoger proceeded to foul off a couple of 2-2 offerings then take a ball to work the count full before launching a blast to deep left center that gave the Rebels a quick 3-0 lead.

"I'm so happy for Martin," Huhnstock said. "He's hit the ball well for us this summer and to get his first Legion home run, I'm sure that had to make him ecstatic."

The Rebels weren't done in the second. Teagan Guckenberg walked, Josh Randolph singled and Easton Senoraske was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jacob DeMeyer, who singled up the middle to increase the lead to five runs.

Mosinee got a run back in the fourth after Max Beste singled, moved to second on an error and scored on a couple of wild pitches. Mosinee returned the gift in the fifth inning as an errant throw to third after Hoger stole second allowed Laggis to score.

Mosinee fought back late, scoring twice off DeMeyer in the fifth and twice off Randolph in the seventh, but Randolph was able to strikeout Drake Grod with the bases loaded to end the contest.

"They didn't quit. They played a good game," Huhnstock said. "(Randolph) got into a little trouble, but was able to work out of it and we ended up getting a W."

The Hodags got a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Comer capped off a 2-for-4 night at the plate with an RBI double down the left field line that scored DeMeyer. After reaching third thanks to a balk, Comer scored on a passed ball.

DeMeyer got the win for the Hodags, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two.

"I really like the way JD threw tonight. That's what we really needed to see out of him before we get to regionals," Huhnstock said.

The Rebels traveled to Whittlesey Friday night to take on Medford in the team's scheduled GNLC finale. No make-up date has been set as of yet for Rhinelander's postponed game against Chequamegon.

Rhinelander's regular season finale against Clintonville has swapped dates and locations. Rhinelander is now scheduled to travel to Clintonville on Sunday, opposed to the Diamond Cats coming up to Stafford Field to play Monday. Huhnstock said Clintonville would not have had enough players to field a team in Rhinelander Monday night.

Sunday's first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
