Babe Ruth: Rhinelander Green waxes Crandon in tourney opener
Rhinelander Green scored multiple runs in every inning and defeated Crandon 16-0 in five innings at Stafford Field in the Senior League tournament quarterfinals.
Rhinelander (13-1), the visiting team by virtue of a coin flip, scored four times in the top of the first and never looked back. The Hodags scored twice in the second, five times in the third, three times in the fourth and twice more in the fifth.
Rhinelander churned out 13 hits in the contest, led by Jesse Mahner who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and finished a home run short of the cycle. The normally right-handed hitting Manher smacked a double in the fifth inning while batting lefthanded. Ian Miller and Jason Huseby each had two hits. Quinn Lamers, Walker Hartman, Teagan Guckenberg, Jordan Kuczmarski, Ben Sinclair and Riley Lepak had the other hits.
Guckenberg started and picked up the win for Rhinelander, striking out seven over three innings of hitless ball. Kuczmarski gave up the team's no-hit bid, allowing a two-out hit to Crandon (2-11) in the fourth. That was the only blemish as he struck out one and induced five ground outs over the final two innings.
The Hodags will play Merrill Gray Monday in Merrill in the tournament semifinals.
Rhinelander's other Senior League team, Laser Pros International, saw its quarterfinal game at Three Lakes postponed Thursday due to soggy field conditions. The teams were scheduled to make up the game on Friday. The winner will play second-seeded Eagle River at Stafford Field Monday in the other semifinal.
In the Prep League, Rhinelander earned an 11-5 win over Tomahawk Gold. The Hodags were set to face the winner of Friday's Eagle River Blue-Tomahawk Blue game in the semifinals Monday in Eagle River.
The tournament championship games for both leagues will be held this coming Wednesday at Stafford Field.
