Rhinelander can't keep up with Wausau American in Little League opener
The Hodags were no match for Wausau American, which scored in every inning and defeated Rhinelander 12-1 in the first round of the Wisconsin Little League District 5 tournament at Hodag Park.
Wausau American jumped on the Hodags for four runs in the bottom of the first inning, scored five more in the second inning and three in the third as the game ended in the fourth inning via the 10-run rule.
Meanwhile, Rhinelander collected only two hits in the contest, including a double down the left field line by Cody Everson in the third inning that scored Alex Rappley for the team's lone run. Tyler Morrison singled in the second inning and advanced to second on an error, but he was caught in a double play after Sam Schoppe lined out to second.
Will Gretzinger took the loss for Rhinelander. The lefty struck out two in two innings of work, but gave up six earned runs on eight hits. Everyone pitched the third for Rhinelander, recording a strikeout.
The loss dropped Rhinelander into the loser's bracket of the tournament. The Hodags will play either Merrill or Roche-A-Cri at 5 p.m. at Doepke Park in Wausau.
Rhinelander's 10U All-Star team will begin District 5 tournament play Monday evening in Antigo, taking on the hosting Stallions.
