Rhinelander Green reversed the roles Tuesday night - and did so in a big way.
The Green team scored six times in the first inning and never looked back, eventually earning a 17-6 win over Laser Pros at Stafford Field.
The result locked in the participants for next Tuesday's regular season championship game.
Rhinelander Green (11-1) secured the league's best record with the win and allowed Eagle River (9-2) to clinch the other spot in the championship game.
Laser Pros entered the game sitting third in the standings and needing a win, and some help, to leapfrog Eagle River for second.
Unfortunately, Laser Pros quickly found itself facing large deficit against Rhinelander Green. Jesse Mahner and Ben Sinclair hit bases-loaded fielder's choices, but the resulting runs were the direct result of either walks, errors or passed balls.
Rhinelander Green kept up the pressure with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Sinclair.
Laser Pros hung around early in the contest. A sacrifice fly by Alex Kubeny and a single by Jacksen Smith plated two runs in the first inning and Laser Pros matched Rhinelander Green with four in the second off an infield hit by Isaac Bixby, a pair of bases-loaded free passes and a steal of home that made it 10-6 Rhinelander Green through two innings.
It was all Rhinelander Green after that, however. Teagan Guckenberg hit an RBI triple in the fourth and came around on a Jordan Kuczmarski grounder. Ian Miller, Devyn Orth and Mahner had hits in a three-run fifth and Rhinelander Green tacked on two more in the sixth, thanks to an RBI groundout by Brian Stoxen and a base hit by Miller.
Rhinelander Green racked up 11 hits in all during the contest, including a 2-for-4, three-RBI night by Sinclair. Miller, Walker Hartman and Mahner all had two hits apiece. Orth, Quinn Lamers and Guckenberg supplied the other hits.
Bixby collected two of Laser Pros' four hits. Smith and Cole Lehman had the others. Kubeny drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
Lamers got the win in relief for Rhinelander Green, allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts over the final 4 1/3 innings. Smith took the loss for Laser Pros, lasting only a third of an inning. Bixby had the longest stint on the hill for the team, allowing seven runs, five earned, on five hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Rhinelander Prep roasts Crandon
Rhinelander Prep and Crandon played to a tie game earlier in the season. In Tuesday's rematch, the results turned out to be the Hodags' most lopsided win of the year.
Rhinelander scored in every inning - including 10 times in the fourth - to defeat Crandon 18-3 at Stafford Field.
After Rhinelander jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, Crandon threatened to make it a game by scoring three runs in the top of the third. It was all Hodags after that.
Logan Cook reached on a broken-bat single and scored in the third inning. Then the floodgates opened in the fourth. Sam Schneider had an RBI single after Mason Davis reached on an error. From there, the Hodags drew four straight bases-loaded walks with Cook, Carter Krueger, Aiden Walker-Jewell and Caleb Olcikas. Kolby Ridderbusch then singled home a run. Two runs scored after Crandon misplayed a grounder off Ryan Jamison's bat. Davis added a single and Schneider ended the game via the 15-run rule on a fielder's choice.
Davis and Schneider had big days in the middle of the Hodags' lineup. Davis hit a two-run triple in the first inning, part of a 2-for-3 effort with four RBIs. Schneider singled his first three times up and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Logan Schmoeger added a pair of hits. Olcikas, Ridderbusch and Cook all had one hit each.
Schneider was credited with the win, pitching two innings of shutout ball with a pair of strikeouts. Schmoeger allowed three runs, all unearned, on three hits in relief.
Season winds down
Laser Pros picked up a forfeit victory over Merrill Red on Thursday. The team finished third in the regular season standings with an 8-4 mark.
Rhinelander Prep (8-3-2) closed out the regular season Friday at Merrill. Rhinelander was eliminated from contention for a spot in the regular season championship game Wednesday night when Eagle River Red and Eagle River Blue played to a 7-7 tie, locking up the top two positions in the Prep League standings. The regular season championship games will be held at Stafford Field on Tuesday with the Prep League title game at 5 p.m., followed by Rhinelander Green and Eagle River in the Senior League championship game at 7:30.
The Northwoods Babe Ruth tournament will begin late next week with the championship games to be held July 18 at Stafford Field.
